Fire force company members and roles aren't as simple as the anime makes them look at first. You've got eight different brigades running around Tokyo and half of them are owned by corporations or the military while pretending to be firefighters. Most viewers just see cool fire powers and miss that the entire system is designed to hide information from the public and from each other.

Company 8 gets all the screen time but they're the weird ones. They're the only ones actually trying to figure out why people are turning into Infernals instead of just burning them and moving on. The Special Fire Force Structure Is a Mess

The Special Fire Force was thrown together from three different groups that hated each other. You get the Fire Defense Agency, the Tokyo Army, and the Holy Sol Temple all contributing soldiers to fight Spontaneous Human Combustion. Sounds good on paper but in practice it means Company 2 takes orders from generals while Company 1 takes orders from priests and they don't share notes. Each company has a Captain, called Battalion Commander, who's supposed to be the strongest fighter but that's not always true. Company 8's Akitaru Obi has zero fire powers. He just punches things really hard and leads through sheer stubbornness. Then you've got Lieutenants, Fire Soldiers split into First and Second Class, plus Sisters for religious stuff, Engineers for gear, and Science Teams for research. Not every company uses all these roles but they're available.

The uniforms tell you everything. Field gear is standard black and gray bunker suits with neon stripes but the formal uniforms change based on who owns the company. Company 2 wears olive green military jackets because they're army boys. Company 5 wears black formal wear because Haijima Industries thinks they're fancy. Company 8 wears whatever because they're broke and nobody funds them properly.

Company 8: The Watchdogs with No Backup

Company 8 is the only one that exists to watch the other seven. Captain Obi formed them specifically because he suspected Companies 1 through 7 were hiding the truth about the Great Cataclysm and the White Clad. They're independent which means no corporate backing and no church money. Just Obi's savings and whatever they scavenge.

The roster is weird. You've got Hinawa the Lieutenant who controls bullets with fire, Maki the First Class who creates fire spirits, Shinra and Arthur as Second Class rookies with Third Generation powers, plus Iris the Sister who can't fight but prays for the Infernals' souls. Later they add Vulcan the engineer who builds their gear, Viktor the scientist who was spying for Haijima but switched sides, and Lisa who used to be a White Clad assassin named Feeler. Tamaki shows up from Company 1 after her Lieutenant turns out to be a maniac. She's technically suspended but stays with 8 because they don't judge her for being clumsy. Company 8 doesn't care about your background. They care if you'll help them expose the truth about spontaneous combustion.

They're constantly broke. Vulcan has to build their weapons from scrap while other companies get Haijima tech shipped directly to them. Obi trains without powers against people who can melt steel and somehow wins through pure technique and anger. It's messy but it works.

Company 1: Holy Sol's Elite Brainwashing Unit

Company 1 is based in Shinjuku and they're basically the church's private army. Almost everyone comes from the Holy Sol Temple which means they've been indoctrinated since birth to believe the Evangelist's lies about purification. Leonard Burns used to run the place and he's one of the strongest Captains ever, able to increase his body temperature to superhuman levels. Karim Flam serves as Lieutenant and he's one of the few reasonable ones, converting heat into sound and ice rather than just burning things. Huo Yan Li is the current Captain and he's a Third Generation who generates his own flames. Tamaki was here before transferring out and she hated it because they treated her like a mascot.

Rekka Hoshimiya was the big traitor here. He infiltrated Company 1 to find kids with Adolla Burst for the Evangelist. He was creating Infernals deliberately to draw out candidates. When he got exposed it proved Company 1's "elites" couldn't spot a cultist in their own ranks. Onyango is another Lieutenant who came out of retirement and actually knows Burns' secrets about the Adolla Link.

Company 1 thinks they're the best because they're religious but they're actually the most compromised. The Holy Sol Temple created the White Clad indirectly through their teachings and Company 1 spends half their time covering up church scandals instead of fighting Infernals.

Company 2: The Army's Muscle

Special Fire Force Company 2 answers to the Tokyo Army which makes them militant and aggressive. Gustav Honda runs the show as Captain and he's a Third Generation who creates flames from his scalp. He's loud, strict, and treats firefighting like a military operation because that's exactly what it is to him.

Takeru Noto, called Juggernaut, is their Second Class standout. He's a Third Generation who forms flames into explosives but he's also terrified of fire which makes him weirdly relatable. The guy can blow up buildings but flinches when someone lights a cigarette. Taguchi serves as Lieutenant and keeps Honda from starting wars with other companies.

Company 2 focuses on heavy artillery and suppression rather than investigation. They don't care why someone combusted, they just want to neutralize the threat and file a report. This makes them tools of the military industrial complex that runs Tokyo behind the scenes. They have the best gear after Haijima's companies because the army funds them properly.

They're also the ones who handle giant Infernals in the Shinjuku district when Company 1 can't handle it or when the church wants to keep their hands clean. Company 2 doesn't ask questions, they just shoot.

Companies 3 and 5: Haijima's Corporate Goons

Company 3 and Company 5 are both owned by Haijima Industries which manufactures 70% of the equipment used by all Fire Force companies. This creates a massive conflict of interest where the people selling the weapons are also supposedly fighting the fires. Dr. Giovanni used to captain Company 3 before everyone realized he was a White Clad plant trying to prolong his own life.

Company 3 got infiltrated bad. Flail and Mirage were both Ashen Flame members posing as Fire Soldiers. The company focuses on research and development which really means human experimentation. They test on Infernals and try to replicate Adolla Bursts in labs.

Company 5 is led by Princess Hibana who used to be a nun but got disillusioned. She's a Third Generation who manipulates flower-shaped flames and she runs her company like a private fiefdom. Tokuyama is her Lieutenant and the Five Angels are her personal hit squad. Toru Kishiri makes exploding bubblegum as a rookie.

Hibana initially fights Company 8 because she thinks she's protecting Haijima's secrets but eventually flips and helps them. Company 5 has the best research facilities and they discovered a lot about the Pillars before anyone else did. Setsuo Miyamoto was one of their test subjects, a murderer turned Infernal that they experimented on.

Both companies prioritize Haijima's profits over human lives. If a village needs to burn to test a new weapon, they'll light the match and call it research.

Company 4: The Boring But Necessary Bureaucrats

Company 4 handles training and supervision through the Fire Defence Agency. They're the most normal firefighters which means they're also the least interesting but the most important for actual public safety. Sōichirō Hague used to command them but after an Adolla Link experience he went weird and paranoid.

Pan Ko Paat is the current Captain and he can increase heat resistance which is useful for rescue operations. Ogun Montgomery is the standout Fire Soldier here, a Third Generation who creates fire spears and tattoos flames onto his body for power boosts. He's friends with Shinra from the academy but chose the steady paycheck of Company 4 over Company 8's chaos.

Company 4 runs the training school where rookies learn before getting assigned to other companies. They're supposed to be neutral but they end up as bureaucrats pushing papers while other companies do the dirty work. When Infernals appear in residential areas, Company 4 evacuates civilians while the flashier companies get the glory kills.

They don't get enough credit. While Company 1 is praying and Company 5 is doing mad science, Company 4 is actually saving people's houses from burning down.

Company 6: Holy Sol's Hospital Wing

Company 6 is also tied to the Holy Sol Temple but they specialize in medical treatment rather than combat. Kayoko Huang commands them as Captain and uses a flaming Rod of Asclepius that heals instead of burns. She's a Third Generation who found a way to use fire for medicine which is rare.

Asako Hague serves as Lieutenant and she's Sōichirō's granddaughter. She's Second Generation and helps run the medical side. Company 6 treats injured Fire Soldiers and researches the biological causes of Spontaneous Human Combustion. They're the ones who discovered that Tephrosis is killing Konro from Company 7.

While other companies fight in the streets, Company 6 runs the hospitals. They know more about the physical toll of fire powers than anyone but they keep quiet because the church tells them to. They've got files on every burned-out Fire Soldier in Tokyo but they won't share with Company 8 because that would mean admitting the Holy Sol Temple knows more than they're saying.

Company 7: Asakusa's Independent Freaks

Company 7 is based in Asakusa and they're completely independent from the government, military, and church. Benimaru Shinmon leads them and he's arguably the strongest Captain in the entire series. He's a hybrid Second and Third Generation which shouldn't be possible but he makes it work. He can control flames others create and generate his own plasma.

Konro is his Lieutenant and second-in-command. He used to be powerful but absorbed an Infernal's power and got Tephrosis which is slowly killing him. Now he's the tactical brain while Benimaru is the muscle. The twin sisters Hinata and Hikage serve as Fire Soldiers and they're Third Generations who wear fox-themed cloaks made of fire.

Company 7 follows traditional Japanese firefighting methods mixed with pyrokinesis. They don't trust the other companies and they especially hate Haijima Industries. Benimaru nearly killed Obi during their first meeting because he thought Company 8 was just another corporate puppet. Once he realized they were independent too, he became an ally.

They're the only ones who knew about the Tabernacle and the secrets of the Great Cataclysm before Company 8 started digging. Asakusa operates like its own country within Tokyo and Company 7 protects it fiercely.

Ranks and Jobs That Aren't Just "Shoot Fire"

Everyone focuses on the flashy combat types but Fire Force companies need support staff to function. Sisters like Iris pray for the souls of Infernals during purification. It's not just spiritual fluff, the ritual actually helps release the souls from their torment according to the lore. Without a Sister present, the purification isn't considered complete.

Engineers like Vulcan and Lisa maintain the equipment. Vulcan builds custom gear like the new Excalibur for Arthur and upgraded hammers for Maki. Lisa used to be a double agent but now she uses her mechanical skills to help instead of spy. Science Teams like Viktor Licht study the combustion phenomenon and track Adolla Burst signatures.

Fire Soldiers break down into First Class and Second Class. First Class like Maki can lead squads and take on bigger Infernals. Second Class like Shinra and Arthur are basically rookies despite their powers. Lieutenants manage day-to-day operations and multiple can exist per company. Captains are supposed to be the strongest but Obi proves that's about leadership, not raw power.

The Traitors Hiding in Plain Sight

Every company has been compromised by the White Clad or the Evangelist at some point. Rekka in Company 1 was feeding children to the cause. Dr. Giovanni in Company 3 was trying to become immortal. Lisa in Company 8 (formerly) was gathering intel on Vulcan's family secrets about the Amaterasu reactor.

Even the ranks themselves can't be trusted. Licht was a double agent for Haijima before he decided Company 8 was his real home. Hibana in Company 5 was technically an antagonist before she joined the good guys. The entire system is rotten because it was built on lies about the Great Cataclysm.

Company 8 exists specifically because Obi knew the other seven were compromised. He just didn't realize how deep it went. The fact that Leonard Burns in Company 1 knew about the Evangelist but stayed silent shows that even the "good" companies were protecting the enemy.

Fire force company members and roles look straightforward on paper but the reality is a tangled web of corporate greed, religious fanaticism, and government secrets. You've got eight companies that barely talk to each other even though they're fighting the same enemy. Some are trying to save people, others are trying to end the world, and most are just trying to keep their funding.

Company 8 will probably expose everything eventually but right now they're outgunned and outnumbered. At least they know who their friends are. Benimaru and Company 7 have their back, and that's worth more than all the Haijima tech in the world.

The system is broken but knowing how each company fits into the puzzle makes the anime hit different on a rewatch. You start seeing the rivalries in the background and understanding why certain Captains make the choices they do. It's not just about fire powers, it's about who controls the information.
